We never thought we would, but here you go: Barbès, our little Brooklyn club is turning twenty – possibly the equivalent of 100 years in NY club years.
We are shocked to have survived despite a two-year pandemic, a Park Slope location where prohibitive rents are keeping artists and musicians away, a business model based on unpopular taste and a myriad associated dangers that should have killed us long ago.
So here we are, in Manhattan, celebrating hope and renewal with some good friends and the ghosts of the Village Gate (LPR’s historical predecessor) smiling upon us.
RED BARAAT
Red Baraat is dhol player Sunny Jain’s brainchild: a merging of hard driving North Indian bhangra with a New York edge and rock energy. Created with no less a purposeful agenda than manifesting joy and unity in all people, Red Baraat’s spirit is worn brightly on its sweaty and hard-worked sleeve.
SON ROMPE PERA
The Gama brothers, from Mexico City, lead Son Rompe Pera, a Marimba cumbia punk outfit that started on the streets of of Mexico City and has since been preaching its Marimba Party Gospel around the world.
ETHAN LIPTON & HIS ORCHESTRA
Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra delivers original songs steeped in sincerity, soul and theater. Dubbed the city’s “Best Lounge Act” by New York Magazine, The band won an Obie for its show “No Place to Go” produced by The Public Theater.
MAMIE MINCH & TAMAR KORN
Mamie Minch, a longtime staple of NYC’s acoustic blues scene, knows how to stretch out traditional influences, turn up, get deeper, groovier and funkier – with blues classics reworked as feminist future blues, a woozy folk tributes to Yves Klein’s Blue, as well as real foot stompers.
Tamar Korn, of Brain Cloud and Cangelosi Cards fame, has been dazzling us for over a decade, hopscotching, in one set, from early jazz, Western swing and American roots music to Yiddish songs, vocal solos and unexpected recitatives involving new and old poetry and philosophical essays.

Red Baraat
Eight-piece dhol and brass ensemble Red Baraat hail from Brooklyn, New York. (The dhol is a large hand-held drum with two heads meant to be played on both the top and bottom; the dance drum in Punjabi music, it’s heard in virtually all music from Bollywood.) The group’s sound is an amalgam of South Asian wedding bands, pop, bhangra funk, big-band jazz, Balkan wedding music, and the sounds of New Orleans brass bands. Red Baraat were founded by dhol player Sunny Jain in 2008. His previous band, the Sunny Jain Collective, included in its lineup future jazz pioneers Vijay Iyer, Rudresh Mahanthappa, and Rez Abbasi. The new group’s sound stands in sharp contrast to the more genre-specific SJC brand of carnatic jazz. Red Baraat’s instrumentation includes the dhol, other percussion, two trumpets (one of them a bass trumpet), trombone, sousaphone, and baritone and soprano saxophones. The band’s first effort was 2009’s Chaal Baby, issued on the independent Sinj label. It was followed by relentless national touring that saw the band perform marathon shows at small clubs, the White House, and the Bonnaroo festival. Red Baraat’s second album, Shruggy Ji, was released in January of 2013 and reached number one on the Billboard World Albums chart. Gaadi of Truth followed in 2015 and also landed on the World Albums chart. Their next release, the 2016 EP Livewire, captured a performance at the KEXP studio in Seattle that incorporated electric guitar and live effects on some of the acoustic instruments. The ensemble’s fourth full-length, Bhangra Pirates, arrived via Rhyme & Reason in 2017.
