We don't play Manhattan all that often these days, so please join us. It's an early night, and a great double bill. And we are also thrilled that our friends<a href="http://www.parkerquartet.com/"> The Parker String Quartet</a>, which is featured on two of the tracks on our our last album, <a href="http://barbesrecords.com/LRDN.html">Ziguala</a>, just won a Grammy for Best Chamber Group. Las Rubias will be joined by Canadian artist Jayme Stone - a banjo player and composer who went on an eight-week trip to Mali looking for the origins of the Banjo. Mambos and rumbas found their way in the pop hits of Shanghai, Bollywood, Constantinople, Malaysia, France and Japan. Then came Rock and Roll which would conquer the youth of the world - and nothing was ever the same. Las Rubias del Norte's third album, Ziguala, is an attempt to imagine what a pop record would sound like had the Latin influence continued its course without interruption. The album uses electric instruments that defined the rock explosion of the 1960's - such as organs and electric guitars but its arrangements reveal a definite bias for the Latin music it is mostly inspired by. Las Rubias del Norte is a seven piece combo which is fronted by two classically trained singers and backed by bongos, congas, bells, bass, cuatro, electric guitar, piano and organ. On the album, the band also makes use of a string quartet, vibes and marimba. The tracks are re-interpretations of songs from Spain, France, Peru, India, Mexico, Greece, Venezuela, Colombia and Naples. Ziguala is not so much a latin record as it is a pop record that uses a latin vocabulary. <a href="http://barbesrecords.com/LRDN.html">LAS RUBIAS DEL NORTE Celebrate the release of their new album Ziguala</a> <a href="http://www.joespub.com/component/option,com_shows/task,view/Itemid,40/id,4295">AT JOE'S PUB, March 12th at 7:30pm</a> What if America had lost the war for cultural hegemony and Latin music had become the common language for popular sounds the world around? Ziguala, the new record from Las Rubias del Norte could very well be the answer. The group lives in Brooklyn, but its members work in a parallel universe in which the clave won over the rock backbeat. Fronted by vocalists Allyssa Lamb and Emily Hurst, with rich backing from a seven-piece ensemble, Las Rubias traverse a global map whose often blurry sonic borders are hued with what Jelly Roll Morton once called “the Spanish tinge.” After two albums – Rumba Internationale (2004) and Panamericana (2006) – that evoked a 1950s air, the rubias have added new colors to their palette and ramble further in their repertoire for Ziguala. The band bids farewell, for the most part, to its beloved glockenspiel and brings in some zesty Farfisa organ, hints of distortion, some surf guitar and the vaguely mutant presence of effect pedals. But that’s not all. There’s also marimba, vibraphone, Hammond B-3 organ, and a string quartet sitting on a couple of tracks. This vivid instrumentation fires up a kaleidoscopic array of songs plucked from traditions – from Bollywood to Tex-Mex, Neapolitan folklore to Kurt Weill – that aren’t always what they seem. While the dynamic range and the geographic scope are wider than ever,  Las Rubias do keep the Pan-Latin spirit alive by treating it all like it was recorded in Veracruz in 1962 . Dear all, Las Rubias will be playing this coming Monday. Hello all, Las Rubias del Norte will be performing at Barbès tomorrow night, saturday dec 19, at 10:00pm. Last holiday show of the decade.
