LAS RUBIAS DEL NORTE AT THE GRAMMERCY THEATER

Las Rubias del Norte will be celebrating their good friends’ The Wiyos new CD with a show at the elegant Blender Theater at Grammercy.
Both groups are alumni of the very early Barbès scene, in Brooklyn and Las Rubias couldn’t be prouder of their friends’ success in the past year, including their summer-long tour with icons Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan.
Las Rubias del Norte are working on their third album, which should be their most elaborate to date, with material borrowed from Bollywood, Rebetika, Opera, Venezuelan, Ecuadorian and Neapolitan folklore, classic Mexican songs, the Tex-Mex repertoire, Cumbia, Chicha plus a Spanish pop gem and a rarely performed Kurt Weill French song. The amazing Parker String Quartet plays on two of the tracks. The album is due out first week in March on Barbès Records.
Las Rubias del Norte was started seven years ago, when Allyssa Lamb and Emily Hurst decided to quit their classical choir and start a group of their own. The group’s sound quickly veered off its classical course, incorporating Boleros, Peruvian waltzes, Andean huaynos and Cuban Guajiras. The result played like a dreamy soundtrack with classical harmonies set to a Latin beat.
This should be Las Rubias del Norte only appearance in 2009, before they resume a full concert and touring schedule in 2010.
