Monday Jan 6th:
8:00 pm
JAYME STONE
Two-time Juno-winning banjoist Jayme Stone makes music inspired by folk traditions from around the world. His latest album, Room of Wonders, explores music from Norway, Sweden, Bulgaria, Brazil, Italy and North America. The repertoire includes a movement from Bach’s French Suite, a Moorish sword-fighting dance and Stone’s lush, edgy originals.
9:00 pm
LAS RUBIAS DEL NORTE
Their sound is a re-invention, a nostalgic throwback to a time and place mostly imagined where Peruvian waltzes, Andean huaynos and Cuban Guajiras mix with French opera, Cowboy tunes and Bollywood classics. The result plays like a dreamy soundtrack with classical harmonies set to a Latin beat.
10:00 pm
HAZMAT MODINE
The NY-based global blues band has been traveling the world for a few years now - collaborating with such people as varied as Benin's Gangbe Brass Band, the Kronos quartet, Natalie Merchant and Huun Huur Tu. They were recently awarded a French Charles Cros award and their music is featured in Wim Wenders' latest film about Pina Bausch.
11:00 pm
JOSE CONDE
The Cuban-American singer and composer remains as unpredictable as ever, borrowing sounds from South Africa, Brazil, Peru and urban America as well as rootsy rhythms and humor undeniably Cuban.
12:00 pm
RED BARAAT
An Indian brass band rooted in Bhangra, funk, Go-go and jazz, Red Baraat has become a hit on the world scene, proving yet again that brass music has the power to move masses the way early rock and roll did.
Saturday January 7th.
8:00pm
BAD REPUTATION
Pierre de Gaillande sings George Brassens in English. A tribute and a re-creation of the universe of the French anarchist poet which has won the admiration of Brassens fans and new audiences.
9:00pm
FOLKLORE URBANO
Colombian composer Pablo Mayor meshes Colombian roots music with big band sounds and urban rhythms in ways that both showcase the singularity of the music - and makes people dance
10:00pm
LES CHAUDS LAPINS
Les Chauds Lapins (“the hot rabbits”) re-arranges long-forgotten French classics from the 20's and 40's for banjo-ukes, string trio, guitar and winds, mixing the rootsiness of early American jazz with the lushness of a Bernard Hermann film soundtrack.
11:00pm
MARCO CALLIARI
Montreal resident and former member of trash metal band Anonymus, Marco Calliari explores the music of the Italian diaspora with nods to Flamenco, Klezmer and circus music.
12:00pm
SLAVIC SOUL PARTY
After more than ten years of mashing Serbian rhytms, funk grooves, Gypsy accordion, and brass power, Slavic Soul Party! has become the godfather of American Balkan music - praised by the likes of Boban Markovic, Sufjan Stevens and Gogol Bordello.
